this was a lovely weekend. well, except for an opening shift at the coffee shop. opening shift bad. opening shift has rwkn up at four thirty a to the m. rwkn not happy. most especially because she worked late the evening before, but, ya know, a nap, and a sudden realization that the kids and the husband could probably visit his homeland without her made things a tad bit better. if by tad you mean vastly improved my outlook on life. which doesn't make sense, but i'm up in the middle of the night, so it's what i've got. and thus ends the mixed tense with third party overtones.

the venerable ms. j picked me up later saturday afternoon. we discovered a new deli (try the portabella reuben. trust me) and we took a gander at antiques. there is the cutest little antique store by my house. just darling. and under loved. ours is a working class neighborhood, and the clientele visit in search of practical furniture, and thus one is able to find lovely antiques for a song.

for years, i've been longing to buy something from the dear man at the helm, and i found, among other things, a cuckoo clock. it is a real one, and mr. antique wanted to make sure that it was going to a good home. i hope that we can provide one. after all, it is a dear clock, and deserves a happy life. mr. antique even offered to drop by the house if we needed help with the installation. see why i adore him so? this visit i found the perfect lamps for the leon's dresser. now that we've moved to the garret, i really want it to be just so. oh, and the venerable ms. j found an absolutely perfect bedside table while she was there. a most productive visit.

we lunched at a new york style deli. it's nothing like the impostors in town. the real deal. and boy gee howdy was it good. fig/walnut/goatcheese/spinach salad, veggie reuben (i know, i go to an authentic deli and i get something completely un-authentic, right?), and minestrone soup. laws was it good. locals? get on the stick. hint: try the sandwich with portabello mushrooms. it was so good that we went back on sunday.

there was more piddling around later that day. i found a glass washboard to replace the insufficient metal one that i've been using, and a dresser scarf. we stopped by the venerable ms. j's on our way home, and her lovely neighbor k gifted upon me a tension rod...the perfect foil for my handwashables. no dripping over the side of the tub, for you, saucy wenches!

later that evening my friend r picked me up on a whim. fried food and wii fitness ensued. she, of the witty tongue, may have given me verbal whiplash, as well. good times.

yesterday we met up with k, and another k. coffee. knitting. a bit more antiquing. good stuff. i just can't get over the antique thing. lest you think i have unlimited funds, or unlimited free time (there was some lawn mowing and the like in between social engagements)...i'll have you know that it's not about buying necessarily, but of finding hidden treasures. things i didn't know existed. we saw a chatelaine that was out of this world. if you click on the image above, it should take you to the ebay auction from whence it came.

my men have returned, and we have a busy week ahead. it was lovely to have a wee respite before all the crazy ensues.
