geez, man. the daily life? it be rockin' right now.
yesterday was one of those rollercoasters that reminded me not to count each and every failure (kind of like the days in the drive thru at the coffee shop where you only remembered the outrageously rude 5% of your customers, and forgot about the rest).
mr8 has been crabby. downright rude. nasty and tantrumy in the mornings. i dig where he's coming from. his teacher? i am notsomuchafan. she's pregnant. so, although i've been told by many people that she has always been like this, i'm writing it off to the pregnancy (even though i suspect that they're right). it's seriously hardcore. and first thing in the morning. so, he dreads the morning, and in turn, poisons the household. not good. we've made a dealio with mr8. every week that he makes it through the mornings without being an asshat that he will get rewarded. with something educational, of course, because we're dirty hippies.
his afternoon teacher is amazing. the school is spanish immersion. and he? takes it seriously. he's a skinny eager little feller. and wowza. talk about rapid fire. the dude never ever translates for the kids. and they understand every word. if i could shrink him down and carry him in my pocket i would. anywhoo...they have this thing called "tiles" that they do first thing in the morning on fridays. it's kind of a game. the kids are given number pieces 0-9, and then they get sortof bingo like sheets. some of the numbers are filled in, and then there are spaces left for the numbers. so, it's a crossword or a crossnumeral or somesuch. it starts out easy in first grade and then works it way up.
mr8? is doing really really well at tiles. i'm pretty darn impressed. when i did it earlier in the year? he was more about the talking and less about the working. he was really proud of his behavior this week, and really proud to have his parent as a volunteer. also? i made a math breakthrough. which is awesome. 'cause the rwkn? notsomuchboutthemath. maybe i'll pass third grade afterall! but without the spanish.
and then? on to work. where i did an amazing thing. i had a frustrating day? and just let it water off my duckback. no fretting in sight. i'll chronicle my job awesome in another post, but let's just leave it at...i'm learning and it's rocking.
then, at the end of the day, the boys and i trotted off to the library. this library? ring on the finger worthy. it's this high tech jewel (they even have a macintosh media lab) on the wrong side of the tracks. it's like the underdog coming out on top. beautiful. sadly? the library was closed! but then? awww, yeah. the awesome continued...
sidenote: the rwkn has an absolute obsession with the late night taco trucks in this town. there are at least four that i know of. sadly? the rwkn is also shy about her abominable spanish skills, and her dang near fluent kids may have inherited this trait. a tragedy, no?
so there we were. downtrodden. returning from the library with nothing to show for it but sad little faces. we pass a taco truck? and a plan begins to form. we swoop over and pick up theLeon and head for the taco truck. the taco dude spoke hardly any english, and the kids rocked his socks off. so much so that he gave us our meal for free. the rwkn also threw down a couple of sentences. adventure! victory!
math victory. frettless work day. taco truck adventure. now that, my friends? is what dreams are made of.
