wednesday nights have become volunteer nights. which would be all noble and shit except i kind of get pissy about wednesday nights. which makes me a horrible human being. you needn't tell me, i already know. i also fairly well love it which is less sucky of me.
every other wednesday the kids and i bring food to people with hiv/aids or who are on hospice. i feel all sorts of mom about this, you know like making soup for a sick kid or somesuch. if i could teach these southern cooks to keep vegetable recognizable it would be the perfect gig. theLeon and I used to do this route when we were first married. it's nice to be able to share that with the kids. they complain the entire time that we're headed to get the food, but then they are like rock stars. we all jump out of the car, say hi to our peeps. it's a pretty sweet gig.
on alternate wednesdays i've been volunteering at the library. this is highlarious and awesome. i had no idea what kind of characters i'd be encountering, but boy gee howdy are they characters. most of the work has been busy work, but i'm the kind of gal who really enjoys busy work in a quiet environment every once and awhile.
the most amusing part of this exercise was when they had me labeling the paperback books. you may or may not know that i was terribly surprised to find out that johnny mathis is a black man. no, indeedy. i was under the impression that he was more of a swarthy italian type. this amused theLeon to no end.
which makes me the perfect person to label all the african american romances, right?
so there i am, labeling all the african american romance. and, laws, i'm trying to be all p.c. about the deal. like i don't want to offend the books that MIGHT be african american by not labeling them as such, but i also don't want to label any books that the author doesn't consider african american. a quandary. i swear i about awarded myself a pony when i guessed correctly with a book that had no photo, nor "contextual clues," but was considered an african american book thankyouverymuch amazon.
also? did i mention that there is a whole romance sub-genre for nascar? how much do i love that? so. much. am sore amused.
so there you go. wednesday nights in a nutshell. one small drop in the karmic bucket. okay, half a drop if you take off for pre-volunteering grouchiness.
